Hi,
I saw my doc on friday which was 2 weeks after hip replacement. He told me I could walk more. I am ready to go out into the neighborhood.
My best buddy is a 15 pound mixed terrier (the non barky variety). He is truly my walking and hiking buddy and has been relaxing with me as I recover.
I am using crutches and can walk with one.
I don't have the heart to go out without him.
So how have you handled walking with your doggie?????
If this is possible, how do you handle cleaning up after him when you can not bend down??????????
We have a cute downtown which is a nice place to hang out and a short walk, he loves being there, it is very dog friendly, I recuperated from cervical fusion there last summer.

I was able to bend down, just couldn't squat too low. I made sure my dogs were well trained in advance so they would mind, etc. I had someone go with us at first. good luck!

Well, I have 2 different ways of handling it. Husband and son. :-)
Mine is a 70+ lb puller and certainly not as well trained as Skeets. She would pull me over with 2 good knees.

Both of my guys are 90+ lbs so I know they would have pulled me over for sure. They are way too strong for me to manage so I had to train them. They don't know they are too strong for me now. Or if they do, they hide it well.

No one in the house has taken my poor little friend for a walk since I took him hiking the day before surgery. So much for the husband, son , and 2 daughters.
I am a posterior hippy and can not reach down past my knees. I don't think his 15 pounds will knock me over. I sure hope not!!!! Although I will be going very slow!!!!
It is the picking up what he leaves behind!!!!

Is there anyway he will do his business b4 you get off your property. If we go for a walk mine are great and always save it for when we get home. They do not even stop on the walk. It may be because they were yard trained b4 leash trained. Good Luck! Your pup is lucky - mine won't get a walk until I can handle 137 pounds going down the road at a slow trot (not for a while) - But they love the yard and for the most part are content there. We throw in a car ride and if my other half will walk them then we go somewhere.

Judy Is There A Friend You Could Take With You That Would Be Willing To Pick Up The Poop For You. Wish I Was There, I Would Be Happy To Do It For You. Maybe If You Walk Him Around Your Yard A Bit Before You Take Off He Will Relieve Himself And You Can Take Off To Enjoy Yourself Without Worrying About It. At Any Rate I Sure Hope You Go, Sounds Like A Great Place To Go To Recuperate For A Bit. Rowdy

Hi,
No friends to come with me to do the dirty work. Family is uncooperative. We do not have a fenced in yard of any type. I will have to try to make him relieve himself before we go.
Of course he will probably have a surprise in the center of the sidewalk eating area!!!!!
Here we do have 2 houses on this lot, the back house people are moving out soon and they have a great fenced back yard. I will use that for awhile!!
Thanks for the offer of help, Rowdy.

I am opposed to the choke collars as well. Training a dog by jerking his neck just isn't my thing. I use a clicker and treats and my dogs were trained so fast! And they were happy to train and learn. I did use what I call power steering on Harley for a short while - a collar with prongs on it. They are really not as bad as they seem - just need to make sure they fit well. It stopped the leash pulling immediately. After a few times I didn't need it anymore. He turns with just a feather light touch to his leash now.

This is probably not a good think to do in our condition; it might even go against the hip precautions, but if I needed to get something off the ground/floor, I bend down on my good leg while my operated leg straightens out behind me. I don't even know if this makes sense to you, but it seems to work well for me.

Thanks
My pt showed me the positioning if I absolutely needed to pick something up off the floor.
I am such a klutz, I'm afraid to try it. Oh she also told me to only do that near a piece of furniture or something very stable to hang on to.
My husband came with me this evening for my first walk around the block. He had my buddy. I.m glad I did not try this on my own as I decided it is too soon for me to try this alone.
For now, I will have to sadly leave my pups home while I venture out.

We have over an acre, so we can let our four boys out for a run. We have an uncderground fence fo 1/2 and a six-foot privacy fence for half. I live within a mile of two metroparks, so now that I am better, I can take them for a walk there, or, I can take them up to where I teach; since it is over 20 acres and all fenced in, I can let 'emrun.

What beautiful friends!!!
I have pictures of my buddy, just need to get one of my kids to teach me how to get them from my camera to this site!!!!
My original career choice back in high school was to train dog guides for the blind.
Not many openings and the seeing eye in NJ convinced me to go into orientation and mobility which teaches blind individuals how to travel . If someone comes home with their dog, you still must orient them to get where they need to go.
The last few years I have been working in the schools to help kids with getting the materials they need and teaching braille if needed.
Now that I am fired. When ready to work again, I would love to find an orientation and mobility job. The problem with us teachers is we are extremely spoiled and I do not think I could handle a 52 week work schedule!!!!

I once tried a prong collar on my husky - UGHHH threw that sucker out. We went to obedience class and learned about a genlte leader or head halter. OMG what a difference. We never leave home without them. All of my pups are born pullers (husky and malamutes) but with the gentle leaders they walk wonderful - almost in a heel position (except if small birds fly by - then I get a bit of pull) The trainer helped me fit them - unfortunately some people think they are muzzles - but I quickly enlighten them - They are just like a horse harness - but for dogs - no pain - no restriction on their mouth at all. We do lots of cookies when we walk (walked - haven't wlked them in a while -ughhh)

Yes, the gentle leaders are wonderful. Not all dogs will use them though. YOu have to be patient and work up to them slowly. I have one of those as well. Now the flat collar is fine. When you test for Canine Good Citizenship and Therapy Dog you have to use a flat collar and the dog cannot pull on it. That was the hardest part of the test I think, but we did it!

Your dogs are so gorgeous! I'll have to send a picture of my puppy when I'm on my desk top computer (now that I know how to attach). I just got him in February. He is a Shih Tzu and is now about 6 months old. He (AJ) is so cute, but I've got to get him in obedience school to stop biting!! I douse my kitchen chairs in that yucky tasting stuff, and he still goes after them. That stuff is nasty too. It accidentally got in my mouth once. Oh well, I love him anyway!

Marianne,
When I was first feeling ok enough to go outside and play with Buddy, probably close to 3 weeks (I don't think I ever went outside the first 2) I went in the driveway with one of his toys. As he brought it back to me I used my reacher to pick it up and throw it.
Everytime I pick up that reacher he runs around thinking we are heading out.
Keep hanging in there, I thought the day would never come and it was really only a little over 5 weeks

The white one is Zeke. He's three. We adopted him from an abusive family. He was kind of skittish for a couple of months but now is a loving playful boy.
The other is Rosey. She is going on nine and starting to slow down a bit. She is the alpha of the two and will discipline Zeke if he gets to rough when they play.

Nothing like caribou or moose jerky, camp coffee and a small canned ham wrapped in foil and thrown into a fire when you are out hiking! mmm mmm good. I so despise my husband since he can just take care of business anywhere while we need to find a more discreet place. You definitely know you have landed in Alaska when the 3 year old neighbor boy stands at the edge of your deck and takes care of business out in plain sight. That's just how it is up here - out backyard looked like the woods so off he went. My daughter (4 at the time) was absolutely mortified. We had to clarify the difference between woods and backyard! Whizaway -????? sounds interesting - please tell us more!

I wonder what parents are letting their 15 year old girls even get tattoos. My oldest asked for one for a few years. She is now almost 20 and has not done anything to get one on her own. Maybe the mood has passed!!
My middle 2 are pretty easy.
My oldest is in the army now
Youngest is my worry. She is only interested in eating (nothing I can cook) and getting new clothes.

Since this thread started as a "Man's Best Friend" I figured I'd get it back close to on track.
You Might Be a Dog Person If ...
you can't see out the passenger side of the windshield because there are nose-prints all over the inside.
you carry dog biscuits in your purse or pocket at all times.
you have baby gates permanently installed at strategic places around the house, but no babies.
you have little songs that you sing to your dog, and she always wags when you sing, even though you can't carry a tune.
you like people who like your dog. You despise people who don't.
your bedroom door has a doggie door
you put an extra blanket on the bed so your dog can be comfortable.
your dog owns more clothing and toys than your neighbor's children
you sign and send birthday/anniversary/Christmas cards from your dog.
you decide you might have kids so the dog will have playmates
you talk about your dog the way other people talk about their kid.
you tell your relatives you aren't coming unless the dogs are invited, too
you'd rather stay home on Saturday night and cuddle your dog than go to the movies with your sweetie.
you care more about getting your dog's supper ready on time than your spouse's.
your dog eats cat poop, but you still let her kiss you
you make your significant other sleep on the couch because there isn't enough room for the three of you.

Just like old times! I am loving it!
But where is Skeet? I haven't seen her on the forum today, have you? I sent her a note on her work e-mail account. They must have her busy today--- rats--- maybe she can sneak away for a few minutes and join in.
As for me--- I am supposed to be catching up on some work too. Here and there...it is cool and dreary here in Oregon today (63 degrees). I am wearing sweats and fuzzy slippers.

Okay, you guilted me into joining you. I'm trying to get a shower and clean up before a meeting in 50 minutes... then off to do girlie stuff - hair and nails followed by a short stop at football practice (I can't wait for the first game) to see a friend and her new puppy. Then home to fix dinner and Lord only knows what else. Ya'll picked a bad day to get together!!
I kind of like the cooler weather here for a day or so. It's been so hot! Gets me working on some indoor chores for a change. And with the AC on, I wear sweats and fuzzy socks all year!!
and here are my new babies...

O.K., I confess, I like cats too. I'm just highly allergic to them. They know it too. They will always come a wrap their tails around my leg and I can't resist petting them. But if I rub my eyes or fix my glasses after I pet one the eyes and sinuses are off to the races.

That will be one meat I don't try either...I've done plenty of other "game" meat and it is funny how so much of it does taste like chicken.. Especially Gator. I would have never figured that. Cut in chunks, breaded and fried, it tastes like chicken tenders.

What is it about armadillo that makes you draw the line? I haven't had gator... but have tried some other exotic meats.
I choose not to eat veal or lamb and suffer from the "Bambi" syndrome when it comes to venison. The elk I have had was a little strong for me.... none of this goes over well with my resident hunter.... he goes elk hunting every year but thankfully has not been successful since we have been together. I am, however, thrilled to have a freezer full of salmon and halibut from his recent fishing trips!
Need some zucchini? The onslaught has begun from our garden. WHAT was he thinking planting so many squash varieties? Yikes!

Hey Skeet,
Have not been online in couple of days. Since we are Texans we do see a lot of those precious goodlookin critters in the hill country.
As for eating them, can you believe they eat them in Central and South America as an average diet. Ewwwww.....
During the depression in the USA the critters were eaten by hungry people. They were called "Hoover Hogs" because they were mad at the Pres. at the time because he promised a chicken in every pot...They said that the meat tasted like fine-grained, high quality pork....
Can I go throw up now????

Just for y'all
Texas Armadillo Recipe
ingredients:
1 armadillo, cleaned and cut into serving pieces
1 1/4 cup dry white wine
1/2 cup oil
2 cloves garlic, crushed (optional)
1/4 cup butter
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 teaspoon thyme
1/2 teaspoon rosemary
1 medium onion, sliced thin
1 1/4 cup light cream
1 tablespoon brown mustard (e.g. Gulden's) or Poupon Dijon
1 tablespoon cornstarch
Directions:
Mix all ingredients of marinade and add armadillo. Marinate about 8 hrs., turning meat occasionally. Remove armadillo and reserve marinade. Melt butter in deep skillet and brown armadillo pieces. Pour in marinade and bring to a boil. Stir in seasoning, cover and simmer until tender (about 1 - 1 1/4 hours.) Remove skillet from the fire and place armadillo pieces on a warmed platter.
Mix mustard and cornstarch, then mix in cream. Return skillet to low heat and stir in this mixture a little at a time. Stir sauce until hot, but not boiling, and thickened. Pour sauce over armadillo. Serve with steamed rice.

I remember that Granny on Beverly Hillbillies had some dad-gum good recipes for possum---- so why not armadillo too?
We have a lot of slugs in the Pacific Northwest. If people eat snails and consider them as a delicacy--- why not slugs? (snails without the shell) Seems like it would be a lot less trouble than removing snails from the shell.... I shall have to do a search and find out.

I've had possum. It was roasted over an open pit. Tasted o.k. with hot sauce.
Why not armadillos....They are just flat out ugly gross looking...I know it doesn't make sense. But I don't eat eggplant either. Don't want to eat purple.
I've eaten snails or escargot a number of times.
O.K. can you imagine the first person who walked down a beach and opened an oyster shell?? "You eat it , no you eat it first".

Found a recipe for slugs from Canada. You know, this is almost like we're back on pain pills again!!
Slug Fritters
Ingredients
10 freshly slaughtered slugs cleaned of all outer mucous
1/2 cup of cornmeal
1/2 cup of high protein flour
3 eggs
2 egg yolks
1/4 cup of heavy cream
4 tbs. Of butter
4tsp.of sour cream
Instructions
First chop the slugs into fine mince, then beat the eggs and egg yolks with the heavy cream together. Sift the dry ingredients and then cut 2 tbs of butter into that mixture. Add the egg and cream mixture to the dry ingredients and whip with a whisk vigorously for one to two minutes. Melt one tbs of butter in a sauté pan and pure the batter into 2 1/2 inch cakes in two batches. Serve warm with a dollop of sour cream.
Yields 4 servings.

MMMMMMMMM..... that first ingredient really gets my gastric juices flowing!
"10 freshly slaughtered slugs cleaned of all outer mucous"
Have you ever salted a slug? They dissolve into a mass of mucous.....Ugh.....
Those "gastric juices" would be the ones I taste before I throw up ( a very rare occasion for me, fortunately).
I could use the pain pills today..... I am in great pain doing my (late) 2007 tax return.... lost my son as a dependent ( he made too much $ in his part-time job) so I also lost all his educational expenses I paid for.... owie, owie, owie.
You would think I would have had enough medical expenses for a deduction for those---- but no. I am $1000 short there too. Dang!
I will still get a refund, but not like in the past..... grrrrrrrr

Hope the dogs are going to have fun while you are gone. we have a place near here that is luxury for dogs. Inavale Kennels. They get more attention than at home I think. Here is the link: http://www.inavalefarm.com/VetClinic/VetClinic.htm
They get to play and run on huge acreage and even get to swim in the pond (my labs love water). They describe it as dog camp... just as much fun as you had at camp as a kid.
