OK guys.
I just had my daughter post pictures on the new pics thread. They are all under her photobucket account. I'll see if I can get her to help again. I don't know her password or I would try to figure it out.
It will be better than yesterday when I begged her to trim the toenail daggers on my right foot.
My husband would more than likely cause extensive damage or I would have him do it.

In fact, I think it woke up some brain cells.

It hit your house literally? Wow! Sounds scary. We rarely have thunder and lightning in our area of Oregon (but they do in the mountains and high desert in central and eastern Oregon. It starts a lot of wildfires every year).
It is a beautiful day here today. Not so hot (mid 80s instead of 90s) with 70s due for the next couple of days. I love summer here! Low humidity and a nice little breeze. Perfect.
doug
July 14th, 2008, 01:14 PM
I believe it hit the telephone pole and ran in through the line. Other than a couple of plugs, being blown, I haven't found anything else damaged.
We had a direct hit on our first house. It left a beautiful pattern down the wallpaper in one of the rooms. Blew out a t.v., microwave, and all of the wall plugs...It is very scary. You can feel the charge in the air. Also, I believe the dogs can tell it's coming. They suddenly cowered down.

July 14th, 2008, 05:42 PM
Yipes, you got hit? Glad you were all OK.
We were at our Founders Day in town Staurday when a black cloud suddenly came over and the thunder and lightening started and the torrential rain. Boxes and all kind of things were floating down our closed off main street. Then the wind started, it had been humid all day, it was real tornado weather. Then there was one almighty crack of thunder and a flash, think it was a thunderbolt, and evrything stopped. We were sheltering in a doorway of a store.
We heard later a tornado had hit Orangeville, but we haven't heard where yet. Apparently about 20 years ago the house we live in now had it's roof taken off with a tornado. When my mum was here last month we had tornado warnings so took her down to our basement just in case.
Jo, do you remember the hurricane of 1987 in the UK? That was scary, not a thing that happens often there.

Thanks for the websites Doug. I remember waking up in the early hours that morning hearing loud noises and the wind. I woke Kevin (snoring as usual) and he said not to worry it was just my sisters metal garbage can fallen over and rolling around and he went back to sleep. I got up and went downstairs. Saw my sisters kitchen light on (we lived next door) and went over for a cup of tea (the English cure all). It turnes out it was the Kent Peg Tiles falling off our roof.
A place in Kent called Seven Oaks after it's seven trees, should now really be called one Oak. Many of the orchards in Kent (the garden of England) were devastated too. Kew gardens were also hit really hard. We took a walk with the kids later that day and saw trees down everywhere. Our friends little girl had been trapped in her bedroom by a large tree. She was rescued and and luckily suffered no injuries. Wow, I can't believe I can recall all those details so clearly, usually I have CRAFT disease (Can't Remember a F****** Thing.)

I remember it well! Also the famous bit by Michael Fish (quoted out of context, apparently) that "Earlier on today apparently a lady rang the BBC and said she heard that there was a hurricane on the way. Well don't worry if you're watching, there isn't."
Also about 3 weeks after that, my sister and I decided to take a cheap weekend trip to Jersey and found the place totally flattened! What a wonderful trip that was - not!

Having lived in Florida most of my life I'm well familiar with the first viewing when you "emerge" after a hurricane.
I was in Miami the morning of hurricane Andrew. 150 mph sustained winds. It looked like an atom bomb went off.

I was in Hurricane Alicia in Houston, Texas. We lived on the good side of the Hurricane so we just got the terrible winds. The wealthiest part of Houston is where the biggest part hit. I just remember the howling and rain.
But, I do have to admit...The day before the storm I went and bought all this frozen food, came home and put it in the freezer...Did not get any bottled water, did have a portable radio though...My husband came home and said, "Why the &*^% did you buy all that frozen food?" I said in my blonde Texas way, "So we would have plenty of food if we get stuck in the house." He just gave me this empty stare and said, "What is the first thing that goes out during a storm?" I said, "Well of course the electricity." ENOUGH said......The electricity was zapped and stayed off for 14 hours.....Remember, I am a West Texas gal.......

July 17th, 2008, 11:51 AM
I'm afraid that I have to side with your husband on this one!! 14 hours isn't bad though. My parents were without electricity for almost three months. I made five 1000 mile trips back and forth to take supplies to them and help with clean up. No windows left in the house. Front doors which normally swing out were blown in. We had water from the attic dripping from the light fixtures. Add to that, there was looting going on and constant gun fire during the night. You couldn't call the police. No phone lines. Few cell phones back then. BUT, in the end it all worked out.

Where were your parents from you and did they take a lot of stuff out of the house before it hit? I cannot even imagine the flooding that occurs. I just dread when and if Galveston gets a direct hit or Matagorda Bay and Corpus Christi.....Scary....

They were in South Miami. My sister lived in Homestead The eye of the hurricane went over them..They didn't remove anything prior to the hit. We've been through a number of hurricanes or tropical storms but never, ever anything like that. In south Florida, flooding generally isn't an issue more than a few miles inland.
Here in Tallahassee, with the hills and all of the trees, anything more than a Cat 1 would devastate the area. We have long tree lined canopy roads. Big sub divisions would become isolated.

Usually in the spring time every year I get the bug to look around for generators. Nothing fancy but big enough to keep some of the things in our house going. About 4? years ago the power went out in Michigan and a few other states for few days. I remember one night we drove around looking to see how everyone else was surviving. Ended up at Meijer's where they were practically giving their meat away to keep it from spoiling. Lived off the BBQ grill for a couple days.

With all this hurricane talk , I need to put in my 2 cents. I grew up in Rhode Island, I remember a lot of tropical storms, power outages for days, trees down, water up.
I llived in Atlanta area for 10 years, the first with tornado warnings or watches in the middle of the night.
I am back in So Cal with the unknown threat of earthquakes. I thought they would be the lesser evil, then I experienced my first one 20 years ago. Talk about scarey. I always do the wrong thing and try to run for safety. I was in toys"r"us when an aftershock hit once, I just looked up at the high shelves packed with big boxes, grabbed my toddler and ran!!!
Oh we have fires and flash floods too!!
So I pick hurricanes as the least scarey!!!!

Well i have to put in my two cents here. All these years in Fla and last year I thought the fondue pot is perfect for a storm duh....I have had it like 25 years I am blonde too Lol. So I went and bought lots of sterno and a a few camping things for coopking with the sterno also cause no more gas grill in a condo. I had put bags of ice together to put in the cooler when the electric went. The bags seemed to really keep my freezer cooler much longer then without, it was almost empty of course so I put the milk and butter and perishable stuff up there to keep cold cause the fridge was hot. I tell everyone if we get a sunami here in Fl I will push my aero bed over the bacony with my food emergency bag and drift off into the everglades and then to Texas where my ex is! Got to laugh about it cause it gets to spookey now with tornadoes now. I know I wouldn't last in Ca with earthquakes. uhah nooope

Ok Turtle lady. Love your pix. Especially the one with the dog and that slightly drug induced buzzed look you've got. Classic. Question on the hospital shot though. Didn't anyone tell you that the rubber strips go on the bottom of your feet? LOL

Actually, those goofy socks had rubber strips on BOTH sides. Go figure. It sure made them easier to get on with those crazy contraptions they give you, because it didn't matter which way was up or down.
The picture with the dog was right after I arrived home, and immediately climbed a set of stairs. I was reading all the material they gave me at the hospital, and Scooter, my rat terrier, decided HE was much more important!
I am now at 5 weeks, and the scars look really well; will have to send another pic soon. I have to look at those pictures to see just how far I've come though.

Your incisions look fantastic at 2 days, just a bit swollen. And I had that exact same thought on the rubber strips, Jen. What would we do without our animals who love us so much and are so happy to see us, don't complain when we whine and cry, and listen to us anytime.

I made it through the 7.1 earthquake in the Bay Area. It scared me to death! Saw the Cypress expressway collapsed. All too real and very depressing. Moved to Oregon to get away from that. Found out they have earthquakes here, too, just not as strong. About all we get are the occasional ice storm or wind storm. I can live with those.

About the hospital socks. Mine only had sticky on one side and every time I went to stand up the sticky was on the top. I had not been given a reacher in the hospital so it was impossible to turn them. I may have to send in a suggestion to the hospital.
Of course they are the only socks that will go on with the sock tool!!

Josephine
October 30th, 2008, 08:03 PM
Actually, I was forced to when all the screws and drills started coming in mm instead of fractions. It was a shame because I had a way of teaching new nurses how to figure out that a 3/32" drill was actually smaller than a 1/8" or a 5/32" smaller than a 3/16"!!
Also, though the head sizes of hemi(half) hips as used for fractures have been changed from inches to mms, they still go in the same jumps as they did when they were 1½", 1-5/8", 1¾", 2¼" and 2½"! Very confusing!
