Someone else can explain to the newbies about the monkey. Since Zeke is now in possession of him I imagine that monkey won't be around very much longer. He's been in solitary confinement since the mallard incident.

Quick! Someone call a TKR Monkey Rescue Group. We HAVE to rescue this monkey! He has special TKR healing powers!

Ha! That is one naughty monkey and I, for one, am happy to see Zeke teaching him a lesson. Just hope Zeke isn't into torture. Harley chewed the eyes off Casey's beanie baby goose, so now the goose is blind :(

Anyone reading this will be sure we're all still on drugs!

Doug, I do have to say that the title of this thread alone made me crack up. I'm sure glad you found your monkey... LOL

Run monkey, run!
Dog question for ya! Doug, I see your puppy's pretty paws. Do you cut his nails? How?

My wife cuts his nail. He absolutely hates it. He won't lay still for me. She approaches him when he is half asleep. Rubs him and sweet talks him while she nips them down with a pair of the expensive nail clippers from Pet Smart..Couldn't believe how much they cost but they do make a quicker , cleaner cut.

The female lets me use a dremel tool on her nails. She could care less. It leaves a smoother, rounded edge to the nails.

I don't think mine will llike either, but it's gotta get done. Worried about cutting her quick though. Then they bleed.

doug
August 11th, 2008, 03:27 PM
Zeke has white toes so you can see the quick.
Rosey the female has black toes so that makes it a little more difficult.
And yep. If you cut one it bleeds like crazy. They also have stepic pencls at Pets Mart.

JenniferG

I read that somewhere. Maisy has one white and the rest black. Do you cut Rosey's outside to avoid a mess on the furnitue or floor. If you cut the quick does it hurt?

Doug....so glad you found your monkey. That is THE most adorable picture. And it looks like your monkey has learned the error of his ways with that dreaded, deviant Mallard. That was a sad day in our history.....

Usued to have the sister to Zeke's monkey....Snoopy loved his monkey too...But, this one made loud squealing monkey noises if you pressed the tummy.... Snoopy was my Beagle and would howl everytime....First to go was the nose then both eyes and then the stuffing....Last to go was the Noise.....lol......

Jamie
August 11th, 2008, 03:51 PM
Doug's monkey used to squeal too....but.....that's another story and probably something best left in history.

That's too bad..... So, I guess that means your aren't planning on having a second knee replaced or would you just get a new monkey if that day came?

doug
August 11th, 2008, 07:06 PM
If my other knee has to be replaced, I'll get a gorilla!!
I'm kind of worried about one of my hips. It's been sensitive for about a months. Trying to ignore it and hope it goes away.

My hips bothering me too. Did you see my Xray on the Hip side? I think I titled it TKR to HIP. That's probably my next replacement but I'm trying to put it off as long as possible. Let's see..... what's bigger then a gorilla? I feel like those Migraine advertisements where the person is crashing through the floor.

Jen, the best advice is to go to your vet or groomer and ask them to teach you how to do it properly. I think I paid $12 to have it done and she showed me how to do it. Also, I trained the dogs to be comfortable with it by first just touching their legs, then moving down gradually to the paws. Each time I touched them and they stayed calm I clicked my clicker and gave them a small dog treat. They eventually were comfortable with me messing with their paws a lot. Next I tried making the noise with the clippers while holding their paws like I would to trim them and giving them treats, eventually I trimmed their nails and have never had issues. It helps to catch them when they are already relaxed and resting. Never go further than they are comfortable with. Stop when it gets tense. Keep giving them treats and you'll be fine I think. My dogs and cats are all good about having their nails trimmed.

If the nails are really long, you can trim off just a very small amount and wait a few days then do it again and again waiting a few days in between. Each time you trim them, the quick will regress a little and you can trim more until you eventually get the nails to the right length. Just takes some patience. It's better than going too far and hurting the dog.

Jamie, I'm going duck hunting this year to get even for the monkey and what he went through.

Skeet,
Thanks for the dog nail trimming advice. I have been afraid to trim my Buddy too. I am about to give him a bath, which he does not like!!!

Since I don't have the history of the whole monkey thing - I just want to comment that the title of this thread made my giggle for the day book. I am really glad you found it!

Marianne,
Since you and I happen to be up at 1:16 in the morning, I'll share my monkey with you.

Back around early February, us winter knees were all on the forum whining about knees, sleep, constipation, Therapy, being cold, depressed, getting addicted to drugs. You name it, and we wore it out on this forum.
On member,Pattipoo, got to going on about the swelling. She said her knee looked like a big fat monkey. Well, that started it. I guess because we were all on dope, crazy or both, it became a big topic.
When I first got out of the house, moving around, at three weeks post, I went to WalMart to practice walking. I bought a stuffed monkey.
I had gotten a camera for Christmas so, being on dope, bored, and having a sick since of humor, I started posing the monkey all over the place. Nanner puddin monkey, diving monkey, beach monkey.
And that's how the monkey got started!!

Do ya really think it was the drugs???? I just thought we were so darned clever..... but it did seem to take a *really* long time to write and edit those posts back then.....

I have very fond memories of that monkey.... sorry to see him meet his demise....

Well, I actually picked him up and might sew his arms back on....I felt kind of sentimental..
As for the post back then, I can remember reading some of them and wondering who was posting under my name.

Skeet,
It is so funny. It must be a blonde bond or something because every single thing you said to do, I've sat in my chair shaking my head watching my wife sweet talk Zeke. She takes the clippers and rubs them all over his legs..Taps them on the toes, rubs his stomach. Gives cookies.. He gets the most worried look on his face. I've got to take a picture the next time she does it.
Us dog lovers can just flat get wierd!

Doug, my hip on my TKR leg started hurting a month or so ago too. It certainly eased my mind to have it xrayed yesterday and to find that the pain is not a problem with the joint. In talking with the doctor, he believes it is strictly swelling in the soft tissue...probably from me doing things I didn't or couldn't do so well before the TKR. Maybe it would be worth an xray for you to find out for sure what's going on.

Dr. Doug......what a kind person you are to a monkey who has been such an important part of our recovery. Do we need to establish a Save the Monkey Fund???

doug
August 12th, 2008, 10:44 AM
Well, I hate to say it but while I was out, one of the two boxers got the monkey off of the counter and continued the "demise of the monkey".
Really now, he was of very low moral character. After all we all saw him blatantly laying out on the beach with a mallard and empty bottles laying all around him...
I'll try and retrieve him again but I think he will look like Frankenstein after I sew him up.

Skeet
August 12th, 2008, 10:50 AM
Save the Monkey Fund? Jamie, you know that dang monkey would spend the money unwisely! Buy bunches of bananas and such. Ever heard "get that monkey off my back"? Monkeys are not good, except maybe for Zeke's idea of "fun" with the monkey.

Jamie
August 12th, 2008, 11:07 AM
I guess you're right. I need to abandon my "save the unfortunate of the world" mentality and let Zeke take care of him. Sigh.....I'll miss the decadent little guy, though.

Well, now I know we DO cover everything on this forum!

I cut my cat's claws regularly too. Mostly because I am allergic to them - the claws I mean! Truly! If their claws scratch or otherwise puncture my skin, I get a big white wheal which can be quite bad. Only way to prevent that reaction is to scrub (and I mean SCRUB) the area with a stiff brush and washing up liquid under a running tap (fawcett!)

You know as I sit here watching the Olympics, I realize how important it is to be all you can be. To do what you love and enjoy every minute. Imagine being on that podium getting a gold medal. It must be so surreal and hard to really remember the feeling yet it is a huge moment in their life. The sacrifices, the lows, the highs, all that has been overcome. It is so worth it. And our journeys are so worth it, too. The joy of parenting and the medals so many deserve for that job! The joy of serving others and making their lives a little bit better. I wish I could give out medals - Jo would get a gold one for sure - kind of the all around medal. And Doug would get the gold for best dad ever. Pattipoo for being a joy giver. Jamie for the best person to watch a Kansas game with. Beachcomber for the best friend I ever made over the internet and then met in person. That has to be one of the highlights. Just so many of you all are the best. I love you all!

Okay, this is getting way too emotional for me!!

Hi Jamie,
Not this summer. July did it's annual "amazing vanishing act" and I am back to school in less than two weeks officially, but have been spending several hours there each day for about the last week.... I would have loved to come and see my sister (who is recovering from a 'scope herself) but it is too late now.
Dang! Would have loved to meet up with you too!

If you think about it, we could probably drive from Alaska to Florida and be able to stop and see so many new friends! You could probably hit 1-2 forum buddies a day! What a fun trip that would be!!

I am seriously thinking about joining my army son in Sept to help him drive from Alaska to Socal. After visiting us he is off to North Carolina. If I do this my first new friend to meet will be Marianne!!
