Hip Pain

Hi Jo,

Is it common to still have hip pain after 18 weeks? I am not walking as much because of the advise from all medical professional including yourself. My OS said on yesteday I should be able to walk for longer periods of time within the next 2 months. What is your experience with THR and pain?

Why shy? You will get so much information, support and encouragement from the forums!

You haven't really given me enough information to make any suggestions, honey.

I need to know - was you THR as a result of an old injury or anything like? Did you have any other complications? How pld are you? How long did you have pain pre-op? What kind of hip did you have? You said you saw your OS yesterday - was he otherwise happy with your progress? Did you tell him how you feel?

Why are you 'not walking as much' and what was the advice you got?

See, I need to know all this stuff before I can give you any advice or suggestions.

Answer to your questions:

1. My THR was the results of gross severe OA.
2. There were no complications
3. I am 56 years old
4. I had pain for 7 years pre op; I thought it was my back
5. THR, right hip Stryker, ceramic on ceramic
6. Yes, he is pleased with my progress
7. Yes, I told him how I felt; he said, because he had to cut through muscles in the buttock; it takes a while to heal but should get better over time. He also did a movement of my hip to see if there was pain. It wasn’t! He also said the cold and wet weather was a factor too. The pain is walking over a long period of time or at the end of the day it's sore and painful. I take a hot bath and rub the area with oil. I have found riding my stationery bike is the best relief for this pain. He told me to continue to walk but not for long periods; he further stated this should get better in a couple month. At which time I will be 6 month post op.
8. My surgery was on 11/8/07.

I can tell you that with my first THR, I remember asking my OS when would I feel "normal" again. I was still feeling some pain and had mobility issues at 6 months. He told me that if I was 80, I would think I was cured.. The problem was that I was only 50 and I wanted to do much more than my body was ready for me to do. I know that when I reached the 1 year mark, I really did feel completely healed. Hope this helps. Connie

Yes, this does help. Hearing from someone who have been there is good. I am a walker... Before my surgery I was walking 25 to 30 miles a week. Now I am down to 15 minutes at one time but I can ride my stationery bike 30 minutes or longer.
