Default Bad Fall Two Years After RTHR

Hi Everyone...haven't been on this site for a long time. Things have been going extremely well. That is, until last Tuesday when I took a terrible fall at work. I tripped over a rise in the sidewalk and went down on my hands and knees. At first, it appeared it was just my pride that was hurt. The following morning, however, while getting ready for work I started getting excruciating spasms in my hip that radiated down my leg. The pain was so debilitating that I had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance.

It appears my hip is okay. They put me on pain meds, steroids, and muscle relaxers to help with the spasms. I've been flat on my back for three days.
When I do get up it starts the cycle of spasms all over again. They are getting better...not as intense but are still there.

My question is this. Would a chiropractor help? If so, what precautions need to be taken since I have a prosthetic hip? At this point, I'm willing to try almost anything to get some relief.

Carol

What kind of doctor was it said it was okay? Get it checked by your OS, as Pat says. If all really is well, then yes, I'd see a chiropractor.

Hope you are better soon.

Let us know how you're doing, okay? I think that is all of our silent fear: falling with our new hips! When I first started out-of-home PT, I asked them "What's the best way to fall?" They looked at me like I was insane, but I was serious! At that point, one of my PT's had me practice getting back up (without violating the 90 degree rule) safely! I guess one never knows when one will actually fall or why--it just happens.
Stay safe, my friend,
Patrikya

Carol, I'm so sorry to hear of your fall!!! I do hope your OS reinforces that everything is okay with your hip. Can you get in to see him soon???

Even without a replaced joint, they can be frightening. And they can hurt like crazy because your muscles do all kinds of odd gyrations as you try to save yourself. Ouch! Here's hoping you get better soon.

my apologies for being self centered in my earlier post. i have to admit that i got scared when i read your post. i try not to think about falling and that is dumb. i like the idea of asking how to take a good fall. that's proactive.

i am sorry to hear you fell and wish you all the best.

I am not familiar with the 90 degree rule.

The 90-degree rule is something most surgeons impose on their patients following hip replacement surgery. They don't want you to bend your new hip beyond 90 degrees for a specified period of time (usually 6 weeks) while it heals and the muscles strengthen.

I'm still down for the most part due to my fall. Went to my OS. X-rays revealed my hip is okay --- hallelujah!!! He has ordered an MRI to try and determine the reason for my sciatica (herniated disc, SI Joint, piriformis muscle). Started physical therapy two days ago. It is helping somewhat --- numbness and tingling in foot and leg is lessening. I still have spasms from time to time. Ugh!

Thank you all for your responses. I hear you about the fear of falling --- I do too! When I tripped and it was evident I was going down, all I could think about was my hip. I, of course, landed the hardest on my right knee! I thank God that my hip is okay. Now, we just need to focus on what is causing my current condition.

Best to you all!
Carol

Glad it didnt damage the hip!

Lady on one horse board I frequent got dumped right on her hip a couple years after surgery, then called her OS and told him to quit worrying about people falling off horses!
