Hi, tinks....welcome to BoneSmart! We're glad you found our forum and decided to join.

Congratulations on your new hip!! You're still fairly early in recovery and sometimes you'll get pain like this as your body readjusts itself. As you say, you were in a lot of pain (meaning your body was compensating BIG TIME) and now things must realilgn and strengthen.

I hope you are doing some gentle exercises...walking is very good, and stretches. You mention a "little limp." Tell me more about that! You should be working toward no limp at all. If you still have one, it is possible that you should be using a cane to help provide some support as you strengthen your muscles. Be sure you are consciously walking heel first-then roll to the ball of your foot. That can be difficult to relearn after years of walking incorrectly.

Hi tinks - you haven't said if this sciatica is recent or has been there all along. Nor if you have seen your GP about it.

Well, pain killers will be useful but they don't need to be heavy duty ones. A couple of paracetamol with 2 400mg ibuprofen 2-3 times a day should help. Hip surgery can stir up a back, specially if you've had problems before, but walking with one crutch or stick can certainly exacerbate it.

There's some really good exercises on Back.com complete with videos.

You could also try a TENS machine - I found them invaluable when I had my bad backs. However, I don't have them any more due to the 'magic hands' of my chiropractor! Read here as well Physio forum, chiropractic, TENS machines
