Default Skiing 2 months and 2 weeks from lthr

Thought as an inspiration folks might want to see this video of me telemark turning and cross country skiing shot 2 months and two weeks after my total hip replacement done on Nov 10 2009.

My femur on my left leg had rotated over the years to the point where my left foot was pointing way to the outside. Notice how nicely aligned my left leg is on the view coming at the camera. Yea Haw!!!!!!

Joint is pain free but the muscles etc hurt a bunch after a workout or heavy use causing some limping. Getting better though everyday

You made my day.. I love to ski...and will plan on it even with a new knee and hip... just blue runs no blacks....which I love.. I never fall when skiing... only thing I will have to worry about is getting run over by some young snow boarder...
Thanks for the post.... and congrats.. I know that had to feel sooo good

Vman,
Wonderful video clip! I saw that joy in your face skiing by the camera. Isn't it wonderful having your life back to do things you enjoyed? Congrats to you for having the courage to take your life back and enjoy your cross country skiing!
I too enjoy skiing, alpine rather than cross country. I had BTKR and am back out on the hill every weekend since I work Monday-Friday. I will enjoy day trips to other mountains here in NH between the 22nd and 26th of February during my vacation.
Keep enjoying life!

It's an incorrect type of link. You need to pass that through TinyPics or something to make it a postable link, Dave

I am glad folks liked my video. For those considering a replacement go for it. So far I have zero regrets and the major recovery period flew by and was not nearly as dreadful as I thought it would be. I was 6 weeks on crutches with 20% weight bearing, non cemented, plastic lined cup style. I was going to go metal on metal but my doctor stopped doing these after one went horribly wrong with a very bad metal ion reaction that caused him to almost gut the hip of this patient to get the reaction to stop eating the bone and muscle.

Nice, very NICE! Have to usually settle for packed powder at best in the North East. I'd rather ski then ride but sprained the left knee four times. Not interested in testing it too much. alan

Hey Vman,

I have a metal on metal joint. Doc wanted the longevity not possible with the plastic since I am 39. My surgeon mentioned the possible reaction to the metal as well and said something interesting; women are more likely to react to the metal on metal as their bodies come in contact with metal more often in a lifetime, basically from jewelry. No horror stories from my guy. Like you, I am very active and was back on my hockey skates at 5 weeks - no actual games or anything but the workout from that motion was great, I would assume a lot like skate skiing?

Interesting little factoid - actually MoM is not recommended for women of child bearing age because there is concerns about the ions affecting a foetus.

And it's not entirely true that plastic doesn't last as long - read this 42 years life span for a hip replacement!! which I posted 2 years ago. I am informed that this lady still continues to live a happy and active life! It was a bog standard metal on plastic (not cross linked!) with a 19mm head.
