Good for you, Beaumont's Mom! Glad you have recovered so well. You might consider participating in the forum to offer advice and support to those awaiting surgery or in recovery. It's a great way to "give back" and help others. People LOVE hearing from those who have been there.

Hi Capeeps,

Re your illio psoas muscle....Is it possibly in spasm? That is very painful. I know from personal experience prior to my first THR in 1990. I injured my hip many years before and for several years had illio psoas pain, but didn't know it was that. A very good physiotherapist in Vancouver BC who had studied with Francois Meziere (the founder of the Meziere Mehod) in France, treated me and was able to get the muscle which had been causing the pain, out of spasm.

I'm sending a link which tells a bit about it. That site may help you locate a practioner in the US. If not, PM me and I'll send you her name. She may know of someone.
Good luck.......Jenny

I am glad u have had a quick recovery. that's awesome. I dont let my hip replacement bother me too much. I am cautious when it comes to certain things, but i roller skate, roller blade, tried water skiing but the pull to get up freaked me out so i didnt try it again~!~~

I know what you mean - just when you think your feeling good - you easily forget your pain. I did a really dumb thing last week and bent down past the 90 degree angle to pick something up. I was worried because it had only been two weeks post op at that time. I tried sleeping on my good side but the operable side seems to pull at me and I can't do it for long. I do have the pillow between my legs. It is so boring sleeping on your back all the time. Does everyone experience the hardness in the back of the knee and calf as well? Some days it is worst than others. The muscles seem very hard and sore to touch. Gosh I can't wait until 3-months instead of 3-weeks!!

I was dreading recovery but know at 2 months and two weeks I am teaching cross country skiing (2nd week) and I just made some strong telemark turns in 1 foot of heavy powder. Things progressed fast after New Years Day when I ejected my cane (Nov 10th, total hip replacement.) Swimming, stationary bike etc. Still sore a little in the op area after a workout and limping but it gets better and better everyday with less musle pain and limping. Without excercise feels great, except if I sit too long I limp a few strides to get going. I have decided I am strong enough (and fortunately an expert skier) to go to the downhill ski area and telemark ski Feb 2nd. Biking is really great because it doesn't hurt and my leg is in alignment. I had a fractured pelvis as a teen and bad arthritis in my left hip developed and eventually had caused my femure to rotate to the outside.

Metal hip, with plastic liner in a new socket
non cemented
6 weeks 20% weight - crutches- to stimulate bone growth - no ibuprofen or past 90 degrees for six weeks and my doc said to avoid dislocation 100% protect it by maintaining that rule, forever. However I am already exceeding that at my own risk no problem.

Good luck everyone! Getting to the other side will be there before you know it.

Hi capeeps....to be rid of the pain from the illio psoas muscle spasm find a physiotherapist who has been trained in the Meziere technique. With the right therapy you may be free of it in one or two sessions. I had a similar problem years before I had surgery and was ucky enough to be seeing a physio whose partner had been trained in the technique. It involves stretching of the muscle chains and once I was over it it has never come back.I just tried to post a link but it won't work because I copied it in Safari and Firefox blocks it. I'll switch to safari and send it. Good luck!

I also had a very good outcome. I will be 60 in two months. I stopped playing tennis every day over 6 years ago when the pain got too bad and I put off having the surgery. I finally had it done 4 months ago. I never had any pain whatsoever right from day 1 (except when I moved my leg). I thought at least I would feel the incision! I only took a pain pill when I had Phys therapy scheduled so I could do everything they wanted for about 2 weeks and then I didn't need any medication and was walking a few blocks.

Now after 4 months I am playing tennis again for about an hour all most every day (only rallying back and forth for fun ....which is what I really enjoyed doing anyway). I can finally balance on just my new hip's leg without discomfort while doing leg lifts with the other. I tell friends jokingly that I can't even remember which hip it was any more. I believe I owe a lot of the recovery to water aerobics which I started after about 5 weeks. Being weightless in the pool allowed me to go through full range of motion running, cross country skiing, jumping jacks, side-stepping....and everything I could think of--all with resistance and perfectly "fluid" motion...much smoother than any high tech machine. And I can increase the resistance as much as I want by just moving faster against the water. Of course I never do anything to where it causes any pain.

What a fantastic recovery! I would love to be able to play tennis again. I'm awaiting THR in late June, but the instruction book I got from my surgeon say no soaking in a hot tub or pool for 8 weeks. This seems like an incredibly long time. I'm envious of your pool time!
